First of all, let me state that I much prefer the smooth and crisp lines of gel ink over oil-based ink, even though the gel is much more likely to smudge. Uni-ball's parent company (Mitsubishi) has worked very hard on formulating an ink that carries the smoothness and boldness of a gel ink with the precision and smudge resistance of an oil-based ink. With the Jetstream, they've succeeded!

The pens are well-balanced and the rubberized grip (standard these days on almost all pens) makes this a good everyday pen for the office and school. However, you'll immediately notice how the pen glides effortlessly across almost any kind of paper. The engineers designed the ink to flow with less pressure applied than normal ballpoint ink. According to the back of the Japanese package (I live in Japan), the pressure is something like 100g versus the normal 400g of a regular ballpoint. I can't verify the exact pressure numbers, but I CAN report that the ink is ultra-smooth, bold and glides with very little writing pressure. People with tendonitis or other hand problems may find this pen more suitable for their needs because of the smoothness and light pressure.

The ink itself is in a gel matrix, but the ink deposits more like an oil-based ink. I was expecting it to take a long time to dry, but it dries quickly and is smudge, UV and water resistant.

This is a PREMIUM pen and is the best pen for everyday use if the smudging of a gel is problematic. Please note that even though the pen is classed as a 0.7mm, the actual point contact on the paper is more like a 0.4 or 0.35mm. There is also a 0.5mm version of this pen (a little harder to find) and that could be expected to yield an even finer line. Note that the pen doesn't skip or blob thanks to the smooth ink feed.

This pen is 5 stars and I have ordered boxes for friends, family and myself! It can also be refilled to save money and packaging.

**Please also note that for writing upside down and in extreme environments, the Power Tank RT is best, but doesn't have the same kind of gel matrix oil-based ink that the Jetstream does**

******UPDATE*******

I have found, through informal testing, that this ink, unlike gel ink, does NOT permanently bond to the page. This means that the ink in this pen is alcohol-soluble. True gel ink is pigmented, but this ink is truly oil-based because it contains dyes. Be aware that whatever you write with this is not fast against solvents like common ethanol. Do not write checks with this or pay bills or sign contracts because the ink is not truly fast. For a resistant and tougher ink, the UniBall 207 Signo pens fit the bill. They are true gel ink pens. This pen is still wonderful, but just keep its properties in mind when you use it.
